2025/11/22(Sat.) Report by Shigeru.Tamura

On November 22, 2025, starting at 1:00 PM, we held a Japanese painting(Nihonga) workshop at “Space Department,” an artist residency program for international artists based in Nara. Though the program lasted nearly four hours, the atmosphere was enjoyable and friendly. We delved into the substance of Japanese painting, including making pigments and paints, and lost track of time. Here is a report on the event.

Our participant was Isabel Gonzalez, an international artist. Originally from Venezuela and currently residing in Florida, USA, she is an installation artist and sculptor. Despite her young age of 25, she holds a degree in architecture from the Architectural Association in London (2021), widely regarded as the world's top architecture school, and a Master's in sculpture from the Royal College of Art (2024). She pursues her creative activities with a global perspective. Please visit her website: https://isabelgonzalez.xyz/

The instructors were Japanese painters Ayumi Morinaka and Junya Toda, affiliated with Kaleido Art Gallery. (Biographies and works are available on the Kaleido Art Gallery website). For preparation, participants brought natural stones, hammers, mortars for making mineral pigments, and silk scrolls, Japanese paper, animal glue, and electric heaters for painting. As hosts and English interpreters, Eugene Soler, owner of Space Department, and his wife Shigeko also attended.

Please see below for details on the day.

We definitely want to continue holding similar workshops.
